Surgical Abortion Services:

Making your appointment.
When you call to schedule, one of our nurses will talk with you to obtain pertinent medical information. She will also prepare you for the appointment and give you the necessary instructions.

Before your appointment.
Shower or bath as usual and dress comfortably. You may eat a light meal 1-2 hours before your appointment, if you would like.

At your appointment. You must have a driver due to the sedation you will receive. When you arrive, you will complete some medical forms then have an ultrasound to determine how long you have been pregnant. Dr. Rosenfeld will meet with you and perform an examination. You will talk with one of our registered nurses who will explain the procedure, aftercare and medications. Any questions or concerns can be addressed at any time during your visit. At your request, your support person may be included in these discussions but is not permitted during the procedure. You will receive IV sedation that will make you very comfortable and relaxed. In fact, some women remember very little of the procedure. The abortion procedure takes only a few minutes, using gentle aspiration or suction to empty the uterus. You will rest in a private room with your support person at your side. All post-operative medications will be given to you as well as written instructions.

After care. Most women are able to return to daily activities the following day. Avoid strenuous activity for a few days to prevent unnecessary pain or bleeding. Most women do experience some spotting or bleeding that may last only a few days or as long as 2 weeks. To prevent infection, we advise not to put anything in the vagina (tampons, intercourse, douching) for 3 weeks. We are happy to provide a 3 week check up at no charge or your may see your own physician. Most importantly, if you are experiencing heavy bleeding, fever or pain, call our office immediately. We are available 24 hours a day for urgent medical calls from our patients.

Contraception. We will discuss options for birth control at your visit. Dr. Rosenfeld offers the most current effective methods available. In addition to birth control pills and Depo Povera, we offer Mirena the intrauterine system used by 2 million women in Europe,
Nuvaring the monthly ring, and the contraceptive patch Ortho Evra.

Safety. Abortion is considered one of the safest surgical procedures when performed by a skilled physician. Dr. Rosenfeld has over 30 years of experience and his goal is to provide the best medical care in order to protect your future fertility.
